Hearing You

Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind.

After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not

in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. 1 Kings 19: 11b-13

Pursued by Jezebel
Elijah slumped against the rock
watchful
as gale force winds
shattered boulders
Earth rumblings and flames
licked about his hiding place

Candescence cooled to ashes
Seismic shaking ceased

In the end, there was Your gentle whisper

Pursued by doubts
I cower
search for trees bent
with your passing
rocks split
rumours of the miraculous
some bush alight

In the end
there is the still slender neck
of a Blue Heron
the piercing blue eye
the silent lifting of his wings
across the water.
